From Old to Modern

With a Bank Holiday on friday, it has been a long weekend here in Germany, made even longer by excessive amounts of rain. As all of my plans for the weekend involved either lakes, trees, mountains or some combination of these, a bit of a last minute change was in order.

On Friday I ventured into Munich and was fortunate enough to find my way to the cinema just as an English version of 'Mama Mia' was scheduled. Some may question the use of the word fortunate here, but it was really raining outside, and despite some moments of sheer awfullness, it was actually rather good fun. Julie Walters is a Star.

On Saturday I decided to be a little more sophisticated and venture into a world of painting, sculpture, architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art in Munich.

The first thing to say is that the Museum itself makes quite a statement. In some areas I found myself taking more photos of the building than of the supposed 'art' contained within it. Whilst the sheer white walls and high ceilings make the perfect blank canvas on which to display an array of creations, the lighting, the curves and just the sheer space is incredible.

I started on the first floor with some of the larger and more modern 'installations' (i.e. very large room with 'something' in it). I was rather impressed with two pieces. The first is a sculpture made from, I'm guessing, pieces of steel from old cars. I'm sure its going to be the new alien enemy for Doctor Who.

The second, well it is amazing what you can do with an empty room and some garish fluorescent tubes...

As for the paintings, my favourite painting was this piece by Kandinsky. I found it reassuring that it is called 'Improvisation'. It makes me think that maybe I needn't worry that I've no idea what it is trying to show ;)

There was also an incredible display of all things Silver, as far as I could tell, from a recent silversmith competition. The pieces certainly added to the futuristic feel of the surroundings.

Alongside the paintings, sculptures and installations, there was also an exhibition of great design. Ranging from chairs to computers to cars. I was also rather impressed to find a little corner of Wales, with the Ty Nant plastic mineral water bottles featured - I always thought these bottles were rather cool.

All in all, it was a fascinating visit. And you know, there is something about being around lots of art. It makes me feel, well almost 'arty'...
